EP 23 – Earning Your Spot at the Picnic – Becoming an Ally and Anti-Racist

EP 23 - Earning Your Spot at the Picnic - Becoming an Ally and Anti-Racist - Protesters - www.swirlandsippodcast.com

In the US and around the world, the treatment of Black men and women by police and the greater society at large as seemed to finally reach its breaking point. Fact – our country was built on the systematic disenfranchisement of Black, Brown, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC). But that can change.Β

In this episode, we’re speaking to our non-BIPOC listeners (aka our white folks) and sharing our experiences with racism in this country and ways you can be an ally and learn to be anti-racist.Β

What We’re Sipping On This Episode:

Underwood – Pinot Nior – After being apart for almost 3 months, Sasha and Shara are finally back together sipping on the same wine. This episode it’s Underwood Pinot Nior which is described as having “aromas of ripe cherries, plum and bacon.” After months of sipping on dark red blends and Cab Savs, it was hard for the ladies to adjust their palette to a lighter Pinot Nior. But once making the adjustment, both Sasha and Shara enjoyed the taste of this wine and agreed that it’s a good summer drink. At 13% ABV it’s not quite Sasha and Shara approved, but it’s still a good choice.

About the Episode:

No long-winded words this week. This episode is exactly what it sounds like. Both Sasha and Shara are women of color and experience life as such. While the murder of George Floyd has awoken many non-people of color to the systematic injustices that Black and Brown people experience every day, it’s not new. Many white people are trying to learn (for maybe the first time ever) how to become allies to the Black and Brown communities. It’s more than simply not being racist – it’s about being anti-racist.

Sasha and Shara will always advocate that it is not the job of Black and Brown people to educate white people about racism. There are literally millions of resources our there with a simple Google search. However, they thought it was important to use their platform to speak more broadly about how white people can educate themselves and become allies and accomplices in this fight.
